affordable therapy - Mississauga, ON
Samantha I. Samuels, MEd
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
As we journey through life, unfair things happen. The painful memories create a sense of burden and influence future expectations. While we can't change the past, it is under our control to change the way we look at what happened. As challenging events and relationships unfold, we can control how we respond. We do this by becoming more aware of automatic negative reactions and replacing them with healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviours. My goal as a Psychotherapist is to help you identify and transcend elements of your life story that keep you trapped in a cycle where the same types of people and situations continually recur.
The first step in healing is recognition that your past may be influencing you in ways that you may not even understand. You may have self-limiting beliefs and feel that you are "stuck." Regardless of what happened, it is never too late to let go of your suffering, to transform your life and embrace a future filled with things that seem out of reach.
Special interests include emotional difficulties due to: mood disorders, abuse, untreated trauma, racialized trauma, academic/career/workplace issues, chronic illness, disabilities, discrimination, oppression and legal system involvement. It is my role to create a safe space for you to begin the transformative process of rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
Modalities utilized in session:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
With consideration to intersectionality and how our different identities shape our experiences, I approach client work with an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed and strengths-based framework.

There comes a time for each of us when looking away from our problems or ignoring our needs stops being an effective way to live our life. When the sadness, stress, anxiety, anger or confusion is too much for us to carry on our own. We may imagine that the past was easier or the future will be better, but where we stand now it just doesn't seem possible to live how we know we need to live. When most of us think of our days, we want to feel present, excited, and the feeling of living our most fulfilling and happy life. While no one can promise these things for certain, what I can offer is an introduction to a process. A process where in working together we can explore and practice, be challenged and supported, express authentically and learn from our fears, desires and actuality.
I come from a Gestalt therapy approach which incorporates and eclectically uses meditation, existentialism and body based work to bring about: responsibility for ourselves and others, honesty of expression, and the present therapeutic relationship to challenge and inspire authenticity. Every interaction is different between client and therapist, even quite likely from session to session. We will always attempt to begin where there is support and willingness to work, so that we can honor each person's individual pace, and encourage with persistence, creative growth.
If this sounds interesting to you, please send me an email and we can discuss further to see whether this therapy will be the best fit for you. I offer a free 20 minute phone consultation.
