affordable therapy - Burlington, ON
Hi, my name is Dorothy Heidbuurt and I am completing my practicum placement to graduate with my Masters’ in Art of Counselling Psychology at Private Matters Psychotherapy in Burlington. I work with adults who are struggling with overwhelming stress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and disorders of mental health due to physical, verbal and psychological trauma.
In my sessions, I work collaboratively with my clients using a person-centered approach where empathy and empowerment are key factors. My sessions are focused on promoting personal strengths, minimizing weaknesses and aiding in internalizing positive core values and beliefs.
For the last 18 years I have been working primarily with adults who have had acquired brain injuries. This has included individual therapy and psychoeducation, supportive counselling, cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, and behaviour management. In addition, I also work with family members and caregivers, providing general and specific psychoeducation about brain injuries, couple counselling and family support. This is individually as well as in multiple psychosocial groups. I find this work challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.
All my sessions will be supervised by Marleen Filimon, BSc., MSc, a Registered Psychotherapist.
